MIPAS temperatures in the middle atmosphere

In their paper Version 8 IMK–IAA MIPAS temperatures from 12–15 µm spectra: Middle and Upper Atmosphere modes Garcia-Comas et al. have retrieved global temperature distributions from 20 to 105 km altitude from version 8 MIPAS Middle Atmosphere mode measurements. Shown are composite monthly zonal mean cross-sections for March through December.

An improved dataset of vertical temperature profiles of the Earth's atmosphere in the altitude range 5-105 km is presented in the paper by Garcia-Comas et al. These profiles are derived from measurements of the MIPAS instrument onboard ESA's Envisat satellite. The overall improvements are based on upgrades in the input data and several improvements of the data processing approach. Both of these are discussed, and an extensive error discussion is included. Enhancements of the new dataset are demonstrated by means of examples.
