MIPAS CFC-11 and CFC-12 validated

Relative differences of MIPAS CFC-11 (left panel) and CFC-12 (right panel) compared to other instruments for the reduced spectral resolution period (January 2005 - April 2012). Comparisons with HIRDLS (red), ACE-FTS (blue), Cryosampler (polar = white circle, tropical = black circle), MIPAS-B (purple), MIPAS-STR (green), MkIV (turquoise) and HATS (black cross) are shown. These were calculated from the volume mixing ratios following: MIPAS - instrument / MIPAS.

This study investigates the accuracy, precision and long-term stability of the MIPAS Envisat IMK/IAA CFC-11 (CCl3F) and CFC-12 (CCl2F2) products. For comparisons we use several data products from satellite (HIRDLS, ACE-FTS), airplane (MIPAS-STR) and balloon borne (Cryosampler, MIPAS-B, MkIV) instruments as well as ground based data (HATS). MIPAS Envisat CFC-11 has a slight high bias at the lower end of the profile, which is more obvious in the comparisons of the volume mixing ratios than the relative differences. CFC-12 agrees well with other data products.
