Helmholtz Young Investigators Group

Solar variability, climate, and the role of the mesosphere/lower thermosphere

BILD
Group members: Felix Friederich, Miriam Sinnhuber, Stefan Bender, Holger Nieder

We investigate the impact of solar activity, especially energetic particle precipitation, onto the chemical composition of the middle atmosphere (~ 10-130km), and their coupling to the lower atmosphere and climate. We use a combination of satellite observations from MIPAS and SCIAMACHY on ENVISAT together with a hierarchy of models from a simple 1-dimensional ion-chemistry model to global chemistry-transport (B3dCTM) and chemistry-climate models (EMAC).

We cooperate closely with the modelling group at IMK, with the MIPAS satellite groups at IMK and at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía, and with the SCIAMACHY retrieval groups at the Institute of Environmental Physics of the University of Bremen.
